Cicatricial Alopecia

Cicatricial Alopecia

Cicatricial or scarring alopecia refers to a variety of scalp disorders that cause permanent hair loss. This damaging process can manifest as either primary or secondary cicatricial alopecia.

Primary cicatricial alopecia is a group of idiopathic inflammatory processes that cause follicle inflammation and hair follicle destruction. Secondary cicatricial alopecia can be induced in nearly any cutaneous inflammatory process of the scalp skin, as well as physical trauma to the skin and skin appendages. Cicatricial alopecia, whether primary or secondary, results in the replacement of hair follicles with fibrous tissue, preventing hair growth. However, Cicatricial Alopecia accounts for only about 3% of all hair loss complaints. Bald patches are caused by inflammation in this case, so anti-inflammatory medications are recommended. Although minoxidil 2 percent solution has been shown to be useful, hair transplant is the most effective treatment.
